Eastern New York Commercial HorticultureTour research plots examining various tillage and no-till strategies supplemented by tarp usage for weed control and nitrogen retention. Early plots with rye were planted to cabbage, and later plots with rye and vetch were planted to winter squash. You will also see how tarps are being used on the small-scale (1 acre) garden level to prepare multiple beds for weed-free direct seeding of crops, and see a field being prepared for vegetable crops with no-till drilled cover crop successions.
Please pre-register so we can get a sense of the number of attendees. The event is free through generous support of the NY Farm Viability Institute.

Hudson Valley Orchard Weed Management Meeting

June 25, 2025 : Hudson Valley Orchard Weed Management Meeting
Poughkeepsie, NY
At this meeting, we will discuss previous research on using mulch for weed management, including the benefits of stacking mulch treatments with an organic herbicide program. We will then discuss the treatments in our field trial, discuss results to date, and get initial reactions from the grower, while viewing the field trial. We will then discuss the other study objective, using a mechanical weeding system to replace contact herbicide applications, currently underway in the Champlain Valley.
