Eastern New York Commercial Horticulture2015 Champlain Summer Orchard Tour
June 30, 2015Cornell Cooperative Extension and the UVM Apple Program invites area growers to join us on a tour of orchards in the southern Champlain Valley of Vermont and New York. Pack a lunch and join the caravan as we share ideas with our hosts and each other.
Cornell Extension Entomologist Peter Jentsch will discuss summer insect management, including codling moth, leafrollers, black stem borer, San Jose scale, and apple maggot at each stop on the tour.
Agenda
9:30-11:00. Hicks Orchard, Granville, NY.
Dan Wilson will start the day with a discussion of his historic orchard, innovative marketing methods, and the increasing importance of (hard) cidermaking on his business.
12:30-2:00. Champlain Orchard, Shoreham, VT.
Meet Bill Suhr and orchard manager Michael Huck who are using crop diversification and value-
added processing to improve their business sustainability.
2:15-3:45. Sentinel Pines Orchard, Shoreham, VT.
Whitney Blodgett will discuss adaptations he has made in the orchard, packing, and marketing chain to maintain competitiveness of his family's 200-acre wholesale orchard.
Tour participants will drive themselves to each site, directions are attached below. Lunch will not be provided in order to maximize our time at each farm, please pack a lunch.
