The team leading the national fire blight SCRI grant "Comprehensive Fire Blight Management for the United States" is hosting a March meeting (in person or virtual) as well as a webinar series. This multi-state series will address new research on best management practices for fire blight control. You are encouraged to attend these events which will provide cutting edge research recommendations into how to manage fire blight. Each session eligible for some DEC credits (see below for quantities, and bottom of article for direction on how to receive credit).

CCE LOFP and CCE ENYCHP are cohosting a virtual stone fruit webinar on March 16th.  We will first hear from Dr. Brett Blaauw from the University of Georgia/Clemson University on the use of mating disruption for peach tree borers.  We will then hear from Dr. Terence Robinson as he gives his recommendations from growing sweet cherries on dwarfing rootstocks under rain covers in New York. 

This program is eligible for .75 DEC credits in categories 1A, 10, and 22.  

This training is only for those with experience and does not qualify for the 30-hour official DEC training - you are exempt from the 30 hour training (and eligible for this coaching session) if you have pesticide application experience, either through working on your own farm or through employment on another farm.

Strep resistant E. amylovora (SmR Ea) has been found in many parts of New York state in 2022. How worried should growers be who have resistance in their orchards, or in an orchard nearby?

Muck onion growers are encouraged to join us for this open discussion about pathogenic nematodes. Share your experiences and help design research trials and experiments for 2023 to better understand and manage this pest. 2.0 DEC recertification credits will be available in categories 1a, 10, and 23.

The NYS Dry Bean Meeting is back in person this year, and will be paired with the annual Dry Bean Cutting Event! The morning meeting will include presentations on the latest dry bean research in New York, with topics including market updates, white mold management, western bean cutworm and soybean cyst nematode management, dry bean variety testing, and incorporating NY dry beans into schools. 2.0 DEC credits will be available.

The Dry Bean Cutting will follow the meeting and showcase the canned dry beans from the 2022 Dry Bean Variety Trial. 

Attention Elba muck onion growers! Share your experiences as we provide our updates on the perennial sowthistle research, onion thrips, and Iris yellow spot virus trials. Your input will help us develop research plans for the 2023 field season! 2.0 DEC recertification credits will be available in categories 1a, 10, and 23.

A Certification Exam will be administered on March 24 at 9am by the DEC to Qualified Applicants. The fee for the exam is $100: bring a check payable to NYSDEC the day of the exam.  You must register with DEC to take the exam. Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) is a voluntary food safety audit program requiring minimum standards for the production, handling, packing, and storing of fresh fruits and vegetables. Many wholesale buyers, including grocery stores, schools, and other institutions, require GAPs certification from farms in order to purchase their produce. Farms considering expanding their wholesale markets should attend this training.
