Women in Agriculture Discussion Group: Urban Farming

Each monthly Women in Ag discussion group meeting will feature an established, innovative Farm-her leading the group on a tour of her operation and sharing her expertise on business management and production. Several guest speakers, as well as Cornell Vegetable Program staff, will be brought in to act as resource people for developing solutions to common production challenges.
The May 6 meeting will cover positive public relations and navigating municipal ordinances in urban farming. The meeting will be hosted by Mayda Pozantides (Groundwork Market Garden) and Allison DeHonney (Urban Fruits & Veggies). Participants will learn about production in urban soils and how to adapt farming techniques for urban environments.

To help disseminate information on grants on a more consistent basis, we will be offering a "current grants" webinar on the last Monday of every month at noon
In order to help focus the program, the webinars will be limited to grants that are relevant to fruit and vegetable farmers in Eastern New York.
There is a possibility of webinars related to grants for experimental crops (i.e. hops and hemp) if it is likely that fruit and vegetable growers would be interested.

June 13, 2019 : Write a Food Safety Plan for Your Farm
Join Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany County, the Cornell Vegetable Program, and New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets for a training on understanding GAPs and how GAPs impact produce safety. Learn about Harmonized & Basic GAPs and how it applies to your farm operation. Day 2 -- Begin writing a food safety plan that compiles with a USDA GAP Audit for your farm.
All produce farms are encouraged to complete GAPs training. Understanding Farm Food Safety regardless of buyers' demands is the right thing for growers to do.

Indoor Horticultural Training for Hispanic Employees & Middle Managers

This free training will consist of an intensive two and a half hours training for Hispanic employees and middle managers in Wayne and Orleans County next week (same program at boths locations, am and pm, same day). A hands-on demonstration of weed, insect and disease identification in vegetables including management options such as inter-row cover crops, grafting, and where appropriate, spray options will be used to educate growers. Judson Reid, Senior Extension Associate with the CCE Cornell Vegetable Program along with CCE staff will instruct participants and facilitate peer-based learning. Details on each topic will focus on field observations at these farms.

FSMA/PSA Food Grower Training Course

A grower training course developed by the Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) that meets the regulatory requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule. At least one person per farm producing more than $25,000 worth of fruits and vegetables must attend this course once. Participants will receive a certificate of course completion from the Association of Food and Drug Officials.

WNY Produce Auction Summer Meeting (Orleans Co.)
