The ABCs of Websites: A User Friendly Introduction

Thinking about becoming a certified pesticide applicator in New York, but aren't sure where to start? Join DEC representative Erica Mackey for a discussion on who needs a pesticide license, license types, examination procedures, and recertification. Participants will have ample opportunity to ask questions during the program.  

The morning session features vegetable/flower topics: variety trial recommendations, tomato diseases, pesticide updates, grouping flowers by growth needs, and a grower panel. 

The afternoon session covers livestock/forage topics: preventative health care, selecting forages, grazing plans, and evaluating hay quality.

Pesticide Applicator Certification Exam Prep Course

 Join ENYCHP specialists for an in-depth review of topics covered on the NYS DEC pesticide applicator certification exam. This two-day virtual course includes explanation of key concepts on the core exam, test-taking tips for the core and category exam, practice questions, and Q&A with instructors. Course materials, including program recordings, practice exams, and DEC materials will be available to registrants after the program. This training is geared toward certification categories 1A (agricultural plant), 21 (field and forage), 22 (fruit), and 23 (vegetable). 

On February 15th, join ENCHP's Viticulture specialist, Jeremy Schuster, at Samascott Orchard in Columbia County. You can learn how to cane prune Concord table grapes at this workshop on a high-wire training system.

If your farm revenue is $350,000 or less and you have at least three years of farm financial records (tax returns with revenue and expenses from farming) you are likely to be eligible for a crop insurance program through USDA-RMA called Whole Farm Revenue Micro-Farm Crop Insurance.  This crop insurance product insures farm revenue, is heavily subsidized by USDA and requires much less recordkeeping than other insurance programs.  Liz Higgins will walk you through this insurance program, show you how it differs from the NAP program (offered by USDA-FSA) and can help you evaluate whether or not it makes sense for your farm business.

Agritourism operations need employees who are good with the public.  Where can you find a labor force for your agritourism enterprise? What different laws and regulations might you encounter as an employer for an agritourism workforce? How do you get your employees hired and trained effectively? 

On March 13th, we will learn how to prune Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir in the research vineyard at the Hudson Valley Research Lab, where vines are trained to a vertical shoot position training system and will be cane pruned.

This training is only for those with experience and does not qualify for the 30-hour official DEC training - you are exempt from the 30 hour training (and eligible for this coaching session) if you have pesticide application experience, either through working on your own farm or through employment on another farm.

This year, we're going to hear from Dr. Greg Lang (Michigan State) and Dr. Ioannis Minas (Colorado State) on their recent findings from the multi-state NC-140 rootstock trials for sweet cherries, tart cherries, and peaches. We will then learn about managing bacterial canker and blossom blast in sweet cherry with Dr. George Sundin (Michigan State)

Christy Hoepting and Frank Hay will get growers ready for the season with updates on managing Stemphylium Leaf Blight fungicide resistance, progress made towards understanding and managing bacterial bulb rot of onion, and results of the 2023 nematode survey and research project. 2.5 DEC recertification credits will be offered in categories 1A, 10 and 23.

A Certification Exam will be administered on March 21st at 9am by the DEC to Qualified Applicants. The fee for the exam is $100: bring a check payable to NYSDEC the day of the exam.  You must register with DEC to take the exam. The NYS Dry Bean Meeting will be paired with the annual Dry Bean Cutting Event again this year! The morning meeting will include presentations on the latest dry bean research in New York, with topics including market updates, white mold management, western bean cutworm management, dry bean variety testing, and incorporating NY dry beans into schools. 1.5 DEC credits will be available in categories 10, 1a, 21, 23. CCA credits will be available too.

The Dry Bean Cutting will follow the meeting and showcase the canned dry beans from the 2023 Dry Bean Variety Trial.

Spring started earlier than usual in some parts of New York's fruit production regions, and CCE is taking a proactive approach to get information on frost protection and its science out to NY fruit growers. There have been some advances in frost protection in recent years, along with promising ongoing research. We will be having a Cornell Statewide Frost Protection Webinar with several Cornell scientists and an invited speaker next week. Growers will have plenty of time to ask questions during this very informative webinar as apple trees continue advancing their bud phenology.

Join us for a live, virtual training on scouting of major insect pests of apple orchards. Anna Wallis (NYSIPM Program), Mike Basedow (CCE ENYCHP), and Janet van Zoeren (CCE LOFT), will broadcast from orchards in their region to discuss best practices for monitoring. We will review monitoring/scouting procedures for major economically significant pests. We will also share resources available for helping with identification of pests and forecasting pest activity.
