As many of you may know, We've been working on a statewide precision harvest management experiment, a 2 year funded USDA Specialty Crops Block Grant and New York Farm Viability Grant, "Measuring and Extending the Benefits of More Accurate Honeycrisp Harvest Predictions". This project is a continuation of Terence Robinson's precision harvest management work with some modifications. It focuses on Honeycrisp within the 3 main production regions of the state, in which many of you were involved.
The main goal of this experiment is to develop guidelines for precision harvest management by determining if Honeycrisp orchards can be evaluated at harvest for storage potential using fruit dry matter content, fruit mineral (peel and flesh) content, the DA meter, and piecing together complex block histories and cultural practices.

In addition to learning about produce safety best practices, key parts of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirements are outlined within each module. There will be time for questions and discussion, so participants should come prepared to share their experiences and produce safety questions.

Grower Input Needed on Apple Tree Insurance Program

AgriLogic Consulting LLC is working with US Apple Association and other industry groups on the development of an apple tree insurance program in addition to the existing fruit insurance program. AgriLogic is very experienced in developing other tree insurance programs as well as a wide range of other risk management tools. This project is being developed in cooperation with the USDA Risk Management Agency and once approved the policy will be available to apple growers in a similar way to other RMA supported crop insurance programs. Initially the program will be offered in New York, Michigan, Washington, Oregon, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Virginia. The preliminary design for the apple tree insurance program would cover weather-related perils that damage trees, with fire blight coverage available as an option. The high cost of new plantings is a major reason for grower interest in this new risk management tool.

This course will demonstrate pest management in fresh market vegetables in both field and greenhouse (high tunnel) vegetables; primarily for those growing for wholesale auction. A hands-on demonstration of weed, insect and disease identification in vegetables including management options such as inter-row cover crops, grafting and where appropriate, spray options will be used to educate growers. CVP Specialists Judson Reid, DarcyTelenko, and Robert Hadad will instruct participants and facilitate peer-based learning. Details on each topic will focus on field observations at the farm.

PSA Grower Training Course

The Course is designed for fruit and vegetable growers and others interested in learning about produce safety, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule, Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), and co-management of natural resources and food safety. The PSA Grower Training Course is one way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in § 112.22(c) that requires ‘At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.’

Best Management Practices for High Tunnel Nutrition and Soil Health

It can have a lot of components and require a fair amount of analysis. Cornell Cooperative Extension, partnering with NOFA-NY in a New York Farm Viability Institute funded project, have been working to identify long-term soil health and fertility best management practices. We will share what has been learned.

Pickle Variety Twilight Meeting
